It was a return to the alternative for Hollywood Blvd as the sounds of post-punk trio Automatic reverbed out of the famed Fonda Theatre.
Members Izzy Glaudini (synths, vocals), Halle Saxon (bass, vocals), and Lola Dompé (drums, vocals) reminded us that the alternative scene (albeit smaller) still simmers in a once 7 day a week Indie/Industrial dance scene.
It was a packed house at a perfectly late 10:30 PM curtain time. The band in support of their 2022 album ‘Excess’ started the night at a danceable pace and continued throughout. A mix of ages in the audience was a welcome sight which may be thanks to drummer Lola’s blood connection to Kevin Haskins aka the still beautiful drummer for Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, and Love and Rockets. Even Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner was spotted out amongst the crowd, with the rest of us bobbing along to the passed-down synthesized beats.
Here at It’s Not You It’s Me we have been posting about Automatic since their first album and also featured the ‘Excess‘ single “Skyscraper” on our Come Thru Vocals Playlist, so we were more than excited to attend the Fonda show on a Tuesday night.
Noticing the turnout, lead vocalist Izzy thanked the audience as she said she knew Depeche Mode was in town and jokingly said she rather have been there. For us, while it’s nice to visit memory lane, we’d rather see the new kids in town who are a throwback to 1960s pop/psychedelic yet with a modern alternative twist. A dash of post-punk and new wave. A sprinkle of sophisticated musicianship. The irresistible and inescapable nighttime sounds of Automatic on the boulevard of stars.
