Tina, the upcoming documentary about Tina Turner, finally has a release date. It will premiere exclusively on HBO and be available to stream on HBO Max on March 27.
Tina was first announced at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, and the feature offers a revealing look at the life and career of the musical icon, from her early success in the ’60s to her resurgence as a global phenomenon in the ’80s. After divorcing from her then-husband and the other half of the Ike & Tina Turner duo in 1978, the singer launched one of the greatest comebacks in music history and landed her first and only No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” in 1984.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is heard talking about the absence of her mother early on in the minute-long teaser video that was released on Tuesday (Feb. 23). “My mother, she used to sit in the window of the kitchen while she was making dinner on Sundays. I used to just watch her,” she narrates while her 1971 hit “Proud Mary” softly plays in the background. “One day, she wasn’t in that window. She was never in it again. I wanted her to come for me. And I waited. She never did. And it’s all right, you know why? I’m a girl from a cotton field that pulled myself above the destruction and the mistakes. And I’m here for you.”” – Billboard.com
