It’s always a bright and stellar day when thee incomparable legendary and queen of reinvention Cher is in thee news!
“Cher took over NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote her Broadway musical, The Cher Show, on Monday night.
The Cher Show — a musical based on the life, loves and career of the singer — includes 35 hit songs by Cher, along with costumes designed by her longtime fashion collaborator Bob Mackie and portrayals of people like Sonny Bono, Lucille Ball and Robert Altman.
The performer was on hand for the start of Fallon’s opening monologue, during which she joked that “he should be” honored to have her on his show.
After Fallon continued to run through her many accomplishments, Cher jokingly slapped him and told him “to snap out of it.”
A little bit later in the show, she sat down with Fallon to talk about her role in Mamma Mia 2, her stage show and her surprising aversion to karaoke.
Of her decision to take a role in the ABBA-based musical sequel and release a subsequent cover album of the group’s biggest hits, she said, “I love [ABBA songs] ‘Fernando’ and ‘Super Trouper’ and my friend, [producer] Mark [Taylor], who has done all my albums since Believe, said, ‘Why don’t you come to the house for I don’t how long,’ and we did the ABBA album in seven days.”
Fallon, who started the interview singing Cher’s rendition of “Fernando,” asked the singer what her thoughts are of people doing impressions of her. “[Yours] was terrible,” she said, laughing. “But I don’t mind it because I have never heard anybody who did a really good one. They just make some noises and facial expressions and I just try to find myself in there, but it’s just so much bullshit.”
She also said that she doesn’t like karaoke: “I get embarrassed to sing in front of strange people,” she said, explaining that concerts are just different for her.
Moving on to The Cher Show, Fallon mentioned that in the musical, audiences learn that Cher was painfully shy early on in her life. “Are you embarrassed when you watch the [Broadway] show about you?” he asked her.
“It was hard,” she said. “There are things I put in it that I hesitated about, but then I thought, if you’re going to do something and people think they know you and you know they don’t, then you gotta put in those unattractive parts.”
Cher added that some scenes of the musical are difficult for her to watch: “There are some parts where I just sob every time, and I know it’s coming.”
In addition to an interview with the singer, and the three women who play her onstage, Stephanie J. Block, Teal Wicks and Micaela Diamond, Cher’s Tonight Show appearance also featured performances of two songs from the Broadway show.
Cher also gamely took part in Fallon’s ongoing segment “Lip Sync Karaoke,” in which the two lip synced to her song “Believe” — with a twist. Instead of Cher’s vocals playing in the background, they had random karaoke singers in New York sing their version of her song.” – hollywoodreporter.com
