MILITARY MAN
Jonathan William Anderson ( J.W. Anderson) graduated in the summer
of 2007 and quickly made his debut at London Fashion Week
that September. He is one of London’s hottest young talents
pushing the boundaries of menswear, which this season has earnt him
the prestigious NewGen Men Award by the British Fashion Council.
Kim Howells: How old are you?
J.W. Anderson: 25
Where were you born?
I was born in a small town called The Loup in Northern Ireland.
What was life like for you as a child?
Sport. Sport. Sport. Having a father that was a rugby couch,
my life was submerged in a lot of extreme masculinity. Think deep heat.
Did you always want to be a designer?
Not always, I did want to be a vet when I was a child, and I went
to drama school for two years, and realised it wasn’t for me.
Then I ended up studying menswear. I kind of fell into it.
Where did you study?
London College Fashion. I was rarely there.
How did you start your career as a designer?
I started with a woman named Manuela Pavesi, who was creative at Prada,
and began doing windows in London.
What have been your most memorable moments?
My most memorable moments… my mother running backstage
after the first show. Seeing one of my necklaces on the cover of Italian Vogue.

How do you begin work on a collection, what are the processes,
do you work in a sketchbooks etc?
I work from what I see on people and then play with the proportions.
The overall look is a little bit of a rattle-bag..
Do you have a muse – if so who?
It sounds really odd but I don’t have a muse.
Must find one.
What has been your favourite collection and why?
I really like the honesty of the first collection.
I think it was the most me.
What was your favourite piece in your S/S10 collection?
The bag trousers.
f you were not a designer what would you be?
A writer.
Is there anyone you are interested in collaborating with?
Nike
How would you describe J. W. Anderson?
Amnesia.
What can we see from your next A/W10 collection and 2010?
The last six months of my life put onto a catwalk.
It’s all about lust, love, adventure, paramilitaries and most of all honesty.
What one piece of advice would you give for those interested in becoming a designer?
It’s like that film ‘Elizabeth’ where she says she will marry herself to her country.
You kind of have to marry yourself to it.
