Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga take a stroll with the Cole Porter original “Anything Goes” for the upcoming duet album of standards Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga – Cheek To Cheek!
Three years after the release of their first collaboration “The Lady Is A Tramp”, Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga are back with a brand new collaboration – a full album of classic jazz standards: Cheek To Cheek. Tony & Gaga became fast friends after meeting backstage at a charity gala in early 2011, and the start of their musical love affair was captured in the rousing and vibrant rendition of “Tramp” that appeared on Tony’s Grammy Award-winning album Duets II.
After a series of performances together including a 2013 Presidential Inaugural Ball, Gaga’s ABC television special “A Very Gaga Thanksgiving”, and the 2014 Montreal Jazz Festival, the jazz duo is ready for the world to experience their album, nearly two years in the making. Tony & Gaga handpicked each song on Cheek To Cheek, pulling from the Great American Songbook with classics from songwriters like Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, George & Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter and Billy Strayhorn. They are accompanied by Tony’s longtime quartet, the NYC jazz quintet led by Brian Newman that Gaga has performed with since her teenage years, and are joined by a big band and a full orchestra on some songs. Jazz aficionados will be able to recognize a tenor sax solo by Joe Lavano and a flute solo by Paul Horn, who passed away shortly after the making of this record. Cheek To Cheek evokes the artistic visions of both Tony & Gaga with respect for the traditions of the jazz genre, but with a modern twist that makes the album quintessentially Tony & Gaga.
September 23 cannot come soon enough for this fresh take on jazz by the last originator and the latest revivalist.
