“Radiohead has officially entered YouTube‘s Billion Views Club, as the video for their 1992 classic, “Creep,” surpassed a billion views on the platform.
The milestone marks the UK rockers’ first video to accomplish the feat. The clip is simple but effective, featuring the band — comprised of Thom Yorke; brothers Jonny Greenwood and Colin Greenwood; Ed O’Brien and Philip Selway — performing the anthem about wanting to fit in onstage among moody, dim lighting. “But I’m a creep/ I’m a weirdo/ What the hell am I doin’ here?/ I don’t belong here,” Yorke sings on the instantly recognizable chorus.
First released in 1992 and included on Radiohead‘s debut album Pablo Honey, the song became an underground hit in America when a San Francisco college radio station’s music director found it in a Berkeley record shop and added it to their playlist. Since then, “Creep” has been injected directly into the mainstream music scene, with countless artists putting their spin on the track and covering it, including everyone from Prince, Olivia Rodrigo, Kelly Clarkson and Lizzo, to Jim Carrey, Moby, Weezer and many more.
On Billboard’s charts, the song hit the top 10 on the Alternative Airplay tally (No. 2) and the Hot Rock and Alternative Songs chart (No. 6). It peaked at No. 34 on the Billboard Hot 100.
